Tips to Save Energy at Work

You can save energy in the workplace, too. Try these tips to improve your bottom line.

Electric Energy Savings at No or Low Cost

  • Turn off computers and monitors when not in use.
  • Make sure lights and equipment are off in unused offices, storage rooms and conference rooms.
  • Plug business equipment and appliances into power strips and switch them off when not in use.
  • Clean all light fixtures, bulbs, lenses and reflective surfaces to reduce the need for additional lighting.
  • Place illuminated outdoor signs on a timer to shut off at 1:00 a.m.
  • Instead of lighting up an entire room, use task lighting over desks and work areas.
  • Program office equipment to automatically go into sleep mode when not in use.
  • Routinely maintain your equipment. It will run more efficiently when cleaned and kept in good condition.
  • Keep heat-producing equipment away from thermostats.
  • Ask janitorial personnel to work together to clean buildings one floor at a time, reducing lighting costs.

Invest and Save

  • Make an investment in energy-efficient equipment and systems.
  • Switch to T8 or T5 fluorescent lamps instead of T12s for significant savings in electrical consumption.
  • Replace old lighting with energy-efficient LED and CFL fixtures and lamps. You’ll save energy, money, and improve lighting.
  • Replace incandescent exit signs with LED exit signs.
  • Hire certified auditors to conduct an energy-use analysis of your site. Their recommendations could save your business thousands of dollars.
  • Replace desktop computers and conventional monitors with laptops and flat screen monitors, which use significantly less energy.
